Chapter 1

Coral Madison wanted one thing: to be the face of a world-famous swimwear brand. For three summers she had posed on this beach, practicing walks the waves washed away. But wanting it was not the same as knowing how to get in the room. The big brands held casting calls in secret. No signs, no dates online. And the next audition window would close in two days. She sat on the sand with her laptop, searching the same dead-end pages again. Her bold bikini, bright blue with yellow trim, was supposed to make her stand out. It couldn't help her if she never found the door. She refreshed the page. Nothing. Her stomach tightened. Two days. A shadow fell over the screen. Coral looked up. A woman stood there in a white shirt knotted at the waist, gold hoops catching the sun. She wore sandals and a small shell necklace. Coral knew her. Marina Delgado. Her aunt. The one nobody in the family talked about, except in low voices near the end of dinner. "You're looking in the wrong place," Marina said. She didn't ask to sit. She just dropped down beside Coral and turned the laptop toward herself. "They don't post these. They never did." Coral stared. "You know where they are?" "I walked a hundred of them." Marina closed the laptop. For years her modeling days had been a rumor in the Madison house. Now she said it plainly, like reading a grocery list. "The good brands send scouts to a private shoreline. Invitation only. The next one is tomorrow." "Tomorrow." Coral's heart slammed. "I don't have an invitation." Marina studied her, slow and honest, the way a judge might. "No. But I still know the woman who runs the list." She pulled out her phone. Her thumb hovered. "If I make this call, you walk in tomorrow. You understand? One shot. They remember faces that fail." Coral looked at her bikini, then at the ocean she had trained in for three summers. "I've been ready my whole life." "You've been dreaming your whole life," Marina said. "That's not the same thing." But she dialed. Coral heard a voice crackle on the line. Marina spoke fast, used a name Coral didn't know, laughed once, then went quiet. She listened. Her jaw set. She said, "She's my blood. Put her on." A pause. "Thank you." Marina hung up and faced Coral. "You're on the list. Tomorrow. The private shoreline." She stood and brushed sand from her shorts. "But hear me. I got you through the gate. I can't walk the sand for you." Coral's search was over. She finally knew where the door was. She rose, pulse hammering, and realized the answer had only handed her a harder question. Tomorrow she had to be good enough to stay inside.
