Chapter 7
The morning after the callback, Coral walked into the indoor beach where the final test would happen. Rolling waves broke in shallow water under a wide window. Golden sand lined the floor. A surfboard rack stood near a painted backdrop of surf. The scouts waited with clipboards. But something felt off. They looked at Coral, then looked away. Two of them whispered.
Madison stood by the rack in a tiny neon bikini, bold stripes bright against her skin. Her dark hair hung long. She had grown up on one stretch of Malibu sand and spent years running every girl off it. Coral was the girl who kept coming back. Now Madison smiled at the scouts like they shared a secret.
"She got lucky with one wave," Madison said, loud enough to carry. "She's a beach amateur. No training. Ask her to surf twice." Her words were short and flat. She stated them like facts, not guesses.
A scout turned to Coral. "Is that true? You haven't trained?"
Coral felt the whispers land. The doubt spread across every face. She could argue. She could list her mornings, her hours in the water. But Madison had already decided the room, and words would not undo it.
So Coral did the thing Madison dared her to do. "Let me show you," she said. She picked a board from the rack and carried it into the shallow water.
She did not reach for the camera in her head. She watched the waves break, counting the sets the way her aunt taught her. She waited for the calm window. Madison watched from the sand, arms crossed.
The set came. Coral paddled, caught the face, and rose. She read the current under her feet. She carved one clean turn, then another, loose and easy, not stiff for any lens. The scouts leaned forward. One lifted a camera and shot.
Madison called out, "Do it again."
Coral paddled back and did it again. Then a third time, cleaner. Each wave was different, and she met each one. The whispers stopped. A scout nodded and wrote.
Coral walked out of the water. Her legs shook, but her chin stayed level. "Amateurs fall on the second wave," she said to Madison. "I didn't."
Madison's smile was gone. Her mouth went tight. She said nothing, which from her meant the subject was closed.
The lead scout stepped forward. "That settles the water question." She looked between the two girls. "Both of you are still in. The brand will decide the face at one final event. A live shoot, cameras and crowd. Tomorrow."
Coral had killed the rumor. The scouts saw her now, not Madison's version of her. But the win cost her the thing she feared most. Not a quiet wave. A crowd, lights, and a live camera watching her face. The one test she had never passed.
