Chapter 1

Cordelia Ashworth had been dead for one hundred and twelve years, and she still remembered the last sentence she never wrote. It sat on the tip of her ghost-tongue every night: the line that would have made her lovers kiss on the cliff. She had died with the manuscript half-finished in a drawer, and someone had thrown the drawer into the sea. Now she drifted along the shore of Nervespool, a woman shaped from cold air, chasing the only thing that mattered — getting the rest of her romance novel out of her head and into the hands of readers who would weep. The problem was simple and cruel. She had no fingers that could hold a pen. She had tried sand, and the tide erased it. She had tried whispering into the ears of sleeping surfers, and they only rolled over. Tonight she followed a low, pulsing hum toward the flat water past the breakers, because the hum was the only thing on this planet that felt like it was listening. It led her under a stone arch of smooth blue rock, into a cave lit from inside by pale veins of crystal. A shaggy cyan dog stood at the water's edge, dripping, two eyes blinking at her one after another. Two feathered antennas twitched on his head. "You're loud," Zephyr Starpaws said. "Not out loud. In here." He tapped his skull. "Chapter three. The cliff. The letter she burns. I've been hearing you for a week." Cordelia stared. He shook seawater from his fur. "I thought you were the signal. You're not. But you ride on it. Talk. I'll remember. My antennas keep everything." So she talked. She gave him the burned letter, the cliff, the kiss she had died before writing. He sat on the wet stone and listened without interrupting, his antennas trembling each time she named a character. When the cave mouth began to gray with morning, she had spoken the whole book, beginning to end, and Zephyr had not moved. "Got it," he said. "All of it. Every comma." He stood and shook again. "Now we need a body for it. Paper. Ink. Somebody with hands." He glanced at the sand near his paws, where a battered book lay tangled in seaweed, its title half-scrubbed by salt. "That washed up yesterday. Somebody's already writing out here. We find them, we give them yours." Cordelia's manuscript was no longer only hers. It lived in the head of a surfing dog, and it needed a hand next.
