Chapter 3

Corinne slept badly. By dawn she had a plan. If a stranger could find her by rumor, she could send word back the same way — but only through a mouth she trusted to stay shut. She needed a courier who did not gossip near water, and she needed a token the masked patron would recognize from her dreams without her having to say the name aloud. She wrapped a small clay seed jar in oilcloth. Inside she placed a single sawback fin, shed clean, and a scrap of paper marked with the shape she had seen behind the mask three years running — three lines and a broken circle. No writing. No name. Anyone who did not dream her dream would see only trash. She carried it into town by the rusted iron bridge, the one with half its planks gone. She crossed slow, one hand on the twisted rail. On the far side stood the butcher's stall. The butcher waved before Corinne was close enough to wave back. Pink apron, wide smile, too many teeth. Corinne had watched her for a year and knew two things: she talked to everyone, and her shadow stayed put when she moved. Whatever the butcher was, she was not a woman who leaked secrets by accident. Secrets by accident belonged to living people. "Hester," Corinne said. She set the wrapped jar on the block between them. "I need this to reach the guard booth by dark. Not opened. Not spoken of near the well or the channel." Hester's smile did not move. "For the night watch?" "For her to hold. Anyone who comes asking after a cracked bottle — she shows them this. No words. Just this." Hester wiped her hands on the apron. "Nora doesn't take packages." "She'll take this one. Tell her it's from the woman across the bridge. Tell her the marsh is listening again." Hester tucked the jar under her arm. Her shadow lay flat on the block, unmoved. "Done by dusk." Corinne walked home the long way. She did not cross water on the return. At her door she stood by the bone totem and waited. The skulls turned in the wind. The newts stayed under the cattails. At full dark she heard boots on her bridge. Not the cloaked man. Lighter steps, uneven. A dented flashlight beam swept her threshold once and cut off. The night guard stood there, silver hair damp, hands shaking around the clay jar. She had come herself. "Someone was already at the booth," the guard said. Her voice was thin. "Waiting. Masked. Wouldn't speak. I showed them what you sent. They took the fin. They left this." She held out a folded square of black cloth. Sooty. Feathered at the edge. Corinne took it. The seal in the box behind her was still cracking. But the patron knew her now, and had answered. A meeting was coming, and she did not choose the ground.
