Chapter 3

Corvus turned the slate stone in his palm. He needed to know what it made her before he made a single move. A wrong guess could put her name on a list he could not erase. "This mark," he said. "What does it call you?" Elara met his eyes. "I don't know yet. But I know where to ask." She led him past the barn, through a stand of heavy oaks that pressed the morning light into narrow bars. The trees opened onto a clearing he had not seen on his perimeter walk. A weathered stone altar stood at its center, carved with wolf faces worn soft by rain. Corvus stopped at its edge. He had studied many courts. He had never studied this. "My grandmother brought me here when I was small," Elara said. She set the slate stone on the altar's smooth top. "She said the wolves leave signs for the people who must decide. Not the ones who rule. The ones who choose who rules." Corvus drew a slow breath. From his coat he took a folded cloth and opened it on the altar beside the stone. Inside lay a small sketch he had carried for twenty years — a dainty crown traced with black swirls and dark stones. The mark of the seat his father had served. He set the drawing next to the slate. The wolf print on the stone faced the crown. It did not bow to it. It stood level with it. Elara looked at the two side by side. Her voice stayed quiet. "Kingmaker," she said. "That's the old word. The one who lifts the crown, or breaks it." She did not flinch when she said it. "I won't lie to you. I didn't ask for this. But I won't pretend I don't understand it now." Corvus closed his hand around the slate. The danger had a shape at last. She was not a witness or a shield. She was a power the court would kill on sight if they learned the word. His twenty-year plan had no line for a kingmaker. It would have one by nightfall. "Then we tell no one," he said. "Not the advisor. Not yet." Elara nodded once, like a door closing. The alliance was sealed, and the secret with it.
