They walked west until the trees thinned and a rough stone mouth opened in the hillside. The wolf stopped at the threshold and lay down. Corvus stared into the dark hollow. "I need to remember it right," he said. "One wrong memory and the whole approach breaks." Elara set her pack down. "Then let me look with you." Inside the cave, she pressed her palm to his chest. Shadow gathered at her fingers, cool and slow. Corvus closed his eyes. He saw the court hall, the false one and the true one layered like glass. Elara's magic peeled them apart. A worn leather journal took shape between them, feathers pressed in its pages — his father's, kept by a hand he had forgotten. The real memory held. The other crumbled to soot. Then another image rose, unbidden. A small girl in a green dress at the court gate. Her eyes meeting his across the courtyard. The thread between them already pulled tight. Corvus opened his eyes. Elara had gone still. "You saw it too," he said. She nodded once. "Shadow bonded. I won't lie to you. I felt it the first night." He kissed her. It was not soft. It was a man finally setting down a weight he had carried for twenty years. She kissed him back the same way. Outside, the wolf lifted its head. They walked together to a low rise where two trunks rose and curved into a single living shape, branches woven overhead. Elara placed her hand on one trunk. Corvus placed his on the other. The bark warmed beneath their palms. The shadow between them pulled taut, then settled — no longer two threads but one. Corvus felt the false memories burn away clean. He knew now which face had smiled at his father before the knife. He knew which council seat had been bought. The path to the court was no longer a guess. It was a map. Elara met his eyes. "Three weeks just became enough," she said.
