Chapter 4 of 6

Three days after the sphere split, Cosmopil heard the crash. A battered saucer skidded across the warped ground outside the Nexus, throwing glowing shards and tangled metal in a wide arc. The courier crawled out bleeding light, clutching a scroll, and collapsed at the boundary line. Cosmopil reached them before the dust settled. The scroll unrolled itself on the desk. It was a peace contract between two hostile realities, its ink seeping red across the parchment. Beside it, an hourglass appeared, sand pouring teal and violet through the narrow waist. Hours. Maybe less. Cosmopil had never seen this kind of binding before — two realities, one page, no precedent. The courier's breath rattled. Cosmopil knelt and spoke plainly. "Tell me the truth each side cannot lie about. That is what I will bind." The courier whispered two words. One reality's deepest want. The other's oldest fear. Then they went still. Cosmopil carried the dying courier inside. Christo Sophus was already there, having felt the pain arrive before the body did. He took the courier into his arms without a word. "I will hold them," he said. "You write." Cosmopil returned to the desk. The sand was halfway gone. They pressed both palms to the bleeding page and spoke the two truths back into it — not as words, but as the shape beneath words. The red ink stopped spreading. The parchment sealed. The hourglass cracked and went quiet. The contract held. Two realities that had never known peace were bound by a form Cosmopil had just invented. But the courier did not wake, and the wrecked saucer outside began to hum — something else was coming through the tear it had opened.
