Chapter 6

Cosmopil rose from the dirt. The burned signature still glowed at his feet. The obsidian shell around the tear kept its many eyes open, but its plates had stopped shifting. Christo Sophus waited in the doorway of the Nexus, one paw resting on the cross at his chest. He had watched the whole binding. He was owed an account of it. Cosmopil owed him that much for standing witness. But the binding had not been made of words, and Cosmopil did not know how to say it back without lying. He walked past Christo Sophus into the tower. Inside, a vintage terminal sat on the desk where he logged completed contracts. Green code scrolled down its screen in a slow, patient wash. He always typed the terms of a binding into the log. He set his hands on the keys and could not press them. Every word he tried shrank the thing. "Fear of crossing" was too small. "Cry repeated" was too flat. The binding had been a shape, and the shape had no name. Christo Sophus stepped inside. He did not ask. He set the whisper resonance crystal on the desk beside the terminal. Cosmopil had seen him use it once, when a client could not speak the loss he carried. The crystal held what a heart meant before language reached it. Christo Sophus said, "You do not have to translate. Only show me what you gave it." Cosmopil considered lying. A tidy summary would satisfy the log. It would also be false, and a false entry would weaken the binding. He picked up the obsidian eye from where it rested on the desk. He set it against the crystal. The eye opened. The crystal took the shape the eye had held — the jagged bolt, repeated, the fear beneath the mark — and let it hang in the air between them, silent and exact. Christo Sophus watched. His painted heart pulsed once on his robe, then steadied. He did not weep, though a thin red line traced down under each closed eye, the way it always did when he received something whole. "I see it," he said. "That is enough." Cosmopil turned back to the terminal. He typed one line into the log. Binding sealed by shape, witnessed by Christo Sophus. He pressed enter. The code accepted it. The signature outside brightened, then settled — a contract now recorded without being diminished. He had found the honest accounting. Not a translation. A witness who could hold the shape without needing the word. Then the crystal cracked. A fine line split it from tip to base. Inside, a second image was forming — not the bolt, but a face pressed against the inside of the obsidian shell, watching Cosmopil back. The half-bound thing had seen the accounting too. It now knew Cosmopil could be witnessed.
