Chapter 1

Crynix woke under a cardboard box stuffed with dry leaves, and the leaves were wet again. Rain had found the gap above his wing. He pushed the box off with his snout and shook out his blue-jay feathers. Three streets over, a gang had carved their mark into a dog last week. He had heard it crying and could not find it in time. That sound still sat in his chest. A blue worg sleeping in an alley was a dare, and Nightlight City took dares. He wanted to be a guardian here. He had chosen this city on the night he arrived, following its lights through a storm because the lights meant people, and people meant something worth standing between. Guardians did not sleep in soaked leaves. Guardians had walls. He climbed the fire escape of the red brick building he used as a lookout. From the top he could see most of his patrol route. He scanned the street the way he always did before meeting the child who had called him brave, the smart one who had started watching for him too. Tonight he was not looking for her. He was looking for a door no one was using. He found it past the rail yard: a small farmhouse with blue siding and a chimney, fresh paint, plywood over one window, a foreclosure notice peeling on the porch. New, finished, abandoned mid-sale. He circled it twice. No smell of people. No tire tracks. He pried the back door with his teeth and slipped inside. He was not alone for long. Three figures in striped jackets came over the back fence within the hour, drawn by the same empty house. Crynix met them on the porch with his wings half open and his teeth bare. The tallest one raised both hands. She said her crew tagged the half wall by the rail yard, the one that said Neon-Tigers in pink and green, and they had seen him chase off the dog-cutters last week. She said they did not want the house. They wanted a friend with claws. In trade, they would wire the place. Cameras. Sensors. A panel by the door. Nothing in this city stayed safe without eyes, she said, and they had stolen good eyes. By dawn the panel blinked green above the keypad. Two cameras watched the porch. A motion sensor covered the yard. Crynix stood in the front room on dry boards and listened to the house be quiet. The leaves and the box were already behind him, dumped at the curb. He had a door that locked, a wall at his back, and a debt to three strangers who knew where he slept. He lay down facing the entry, ears up, and let himself close his eyes for the first time in weeks.
