Chapter 1
Crystalline Frost had promised the dead king's family she would bring them home. Tonight she meant to start. But the great hall of the castle swallowed her torchlight whole. Black ice coated every surface, thick as tree trunks, built up over hundreds of winters. It climbed the walls and buried the floor. There was no open ground to stand on, no space to call the scattered spirits back together.
She pressed her bare palm to the nearest ridge. The cold bit deep. This was not clean ice. It was old grief, frozen hard, and it had sealed the royal family out of their own home. Crystalline was made of ice herself, born of this frozen land. But she could not simply melt what centuries had laid down. Heat alone would crack the walls and bring the roof down on everything.
She needed the ice to want to move. So she walked to the far corner, where a single living thing still grew.
The tree stood waist-high, every branch formed of pale crystal. Its limbs sparkled like frozen lace. Crystalline knew this tree. It had grown here before the hall went dark, fed by the warmth of the family who once gathered around it. The black ice had crept toward it but never touched it. Even now the tree gave off a faint, clean cold, different from the dead cold around it.
She knelt and wrapped both hands around its trunk. "Help me clear their house," she whispered.
The tree answered. Light ran up through its branches, soft blue, then brighter. The cold that poured from it was alive, and it reached for the black ice the way clean water reaches for a stain. Crystalline felt the pull and added her own strength to it. She did not push heat into the hall. She called the dead ice toward the living tree.
It came. The black ice groaned and split. Sheets of it slid off the walls and broke across the floor. Crystalline guided the pieces, drawing them inward, packing them tight around the base of the tree until they froze there in a hard gray mound. The floor opened beneath her. Stone appeared, then more stone, until half the great hall stood bare and clear.
The tree's light faded. The work had drained it. Its branches dimmed to dull glass, and the air around it went still.
Crystalline stood in the cleared hall, breathing hard. She had her space now. The spirits could gather here. But as the last glow died, a thin sound rose from the mound of gathered ice. It was not wind. It was many voices, faint and angry, pressed together in the frozen heap. Whatever the black ice had been holding all these years, she had just pulled it into one place and woken it.
