Chapter 1

Cynthia had smiled through everything her whole life, but nobody had ever smiled through a full night inside the haunted manor at the heart of Blestos. She stood at its cracked front steps with a lantern and a bet in her pocket. The town said the curse ate fear. It kept the laughter out of people and sent them running by midnight. Cynthia pushed the heavy door open. "One night," she said to the dark. "That's all." Inside, the air felt cold enough to pinch her skin. She set her lantern down and grinned wide, just to prove she could. Then the sounds came. A low moan slid down the stairs. Boards groaned like something walked on them. A woman's weeping leaked through the walls. Cynthia held her smile, but her lips shook. The noise crawled inside her chest and pressed on her good mood. She understood the curse now. It did not throw ghosts at her. It fed her fear through sound, wearing her cheer thin until her smile cracked. And a broken smile meant a lost night. Her silver hair stood on end as a scream rose above her. She needed to drown the manor's voices before dawn, and she had nothing to fight them with. Then something rattled near her boot. A skeleton cat stepped into the lantern light. Its bones clicked as it walked, and its eyes glowed bright blue. Cynthia should have screamed. Instead she laughed, because the thing was oddly elegant, like a cat that had forgotten it was dead. "Well, aren't you something," she said. The cat sat and the moaning dimmed, as if its clicking bones cut through the other sounds. She had an idea. If one noise could cover another, she needed more noise, her own kind. She remembered the broken cabin she'd passed on the way up, its sagging boards and one leaning chimney. People had left things behind in it. She darted out, the cat trotting after her, bones tapping a steady beat. Inside the cabin she found a dented music box on a shelf. She wound it tight. A bright tune spilled out. She carried it back into the manor and set it beside her lantern. The music box sang. The cat's bones clicked in time. Cynthia hummed along, loud and off-key, and her smile came easy again. The manor moaned louder, but she could not hear the fear under the song. Midnight passed. Then the slow gray light of morning touched the windows. Cynthia had not stopped smiling once. She had done it. But when she stood to leave, the music box slowed. The spring had wound down to its last turn. The tune died. And in the sudden quiet, the manor whispered something new, a single voice that was not a moan at all. It said her name.
