Chapter 17

The dripping roof marked time while Dagna waited. Near dusk the wolf padded back into the hollow. Nora came behind it, hands empty, the frozen bloom set safe at the cave mouth. "The stone is deep in the cold," she said. "It won't thaw." Dagna nodded, but her chest pulled tight and slow. Two stones lived now in two places. Yet both records were true only if someone judged them true. And that someone was still her. She called Nora and Alice to sit by the blue block. The frozen ice caught the last grey light in its cracks. "Listen," Dagna said. "My heart could stop tonight. Then the stones will disagree someday. A mark will bend wrong. Two of you will read it two ways." She looked from face to face. "Who decides then?" Alice smiled and turned a bead on her gown. "You decide. You always will." The girl believed it. She did not understand that Dagna was dying. "No," Dagna said. "I won't be here." She reached for the marked hide stack and drew out the cave hide, the one Nora had carved from. "When the stones disagree, you do not argue. You do not guess. You go to the cave and read the wall my people cut. The wall is the master. Not me. Not Mikhael. Not the strongest voice." Nora pushed her glasses up with a bandaged knuckle. "And if the cave and a stone disagree?" "The cave wins," Dagna said. "Always. Say it back." "The cave wins," Nora said. "Always." Dagna pressed a charcoal pen into Nora's wrapped hand. "Then I name you keeper of the reading. Not because you carve best. Mikhael carves faster. Not because you are oldest. You are the youngest here." She held the girl's eyes. "Because you found your own wrong stroke and cut it out. You trusted the wall over your own hand. That is the whole gift." Nora went still. "Mikhael has taught longer than I've lived it." "Mikhael teaches. You judge." Dagna took a slow breath. "When you two split, the cave breaks the tie. When the cave is unclear, you hold the final say. Write that on a hide tonight, in the joined marks, so it stands after my mouth is shut." Nora bent over a fresh hide. The pen scratched. She carved the joined marks for keeper and cave, checking the old hide before each stroke, the way Dagna had drilled into her. When she finished, Dagna read every line. Each one was true. "It's written," Dagna said. Her hands shook now, empty and cold. The choice was made. No stranger, no argument, no dying voice could unmake it. Then Nora set down the pen. "Mikhael doesn't know," she said quietly. "He's a half-moon north with the first stone. He'll come home thinking he leads." Dagna's tight heart skipped. She had named her keeper. Now she had to tell the man who thought the work was his.
