Chapter 6

By the third day, Mikhael's hands knew every simple mark. He carved them clean into the blue ice, rubbed them smooth, and carved them again. Dagna watched from her furs by the wall. The wolf lay near the frost, its breath slow. She should have felt proud. Instead she felt the trouble under her ribs. Mikhael could shape the marks. He still did not know what they said. "Read that," she said. She pointed at a line he had cut. Mikhael studied it. "Water. And... cold?" "Two marks. What do they say together?" He stared. "Water. Cold." He shrugged. "Two things." Dagna closed her eyes. This was the wall. He learned each mark like a stone in his hand. But the marks did not stand alone. They joined. Two together made a third meaning, and he could not see it. Every symbol he cut stayed a broken piece. If she died now, he would hold a bag of stones and no wall. She dragged herself up and took the charcoal pen. Her fingers shook. "Watch my hand, not the marks." She scored "water" into the ice. Then, close beside it, "cold." She did not lift the pen between them. She let the last line of the first flow into the first line of the second. "See where they touch?" she said. "Water and cold, joined. Not two things. One." She tapped the joined stroke. "Ice." Mikhael leaned in. "They share a line." "They always share. The join carries the meaning. You learned the marks apart. Now learn how they hold hands." He took the pen from her. He carved "water," then "cold," letting the strokes run together the way she had shown. He looked at the whole shape. His mouth opened. "Ice," he said. "I can see it. It's one word." "Again. New pair." She named two more marks. He carved them joined. This time he did not ask her the meaning. He traced the shared stroke with his thumb and worked it out himself. "Sun," he said slowly. "And peak. The warm wind. The wind off the mountain." He looked up. "That's what damaged the hides." Dagna's chest loosened. He was not reading marks now. He was reading meaning. She pulled a sealed hide from the stack and set it on his knees. Rows of joined symbols covered it, marks she had copied from the vault years ago. "You could not read this yesterday," she said. "Try now." Mikhael bent over the hide. His finger moved along a line, stopping at each join. He read three words aloud. Then a fourth. He kept going. Dagna sat back against the cold rock. For six winters she had feared her knowledge would die in the ice with her. Now a boy read it off the leather in her own cave. The fragments had become speech. She let herself breathe. Then Mikhael stopped. "This part," he said. "These marks aren't like the others." He turned the hide toward her.
