Chapter 1

Dahlia Bleu pulled the last seedling from its tray and knew, before the roots cleared the soil, that this cross had failed too. The petals in the sample jar beside her were the same tired mauve she had bred for six years running. No violet. No lavender. Nowhere near blue. She set the seedling on the potting bench and opened her logbook. Every parent plant in her greenhouse traced back to the same four lines. None of them carried the pigment pathway that made blue possible in other flowers. She had been crossing dead ends into dead ends. The math was plain. Without a parent that already carried the pathway, she would keep breeding mauve until she died, the way the Dutch grower had died in 1887 with lavender in his notes and nothing in his pots. A shadow moved past the greenhouse glass. Dahlia knew the walk before she saw the face. Dahlia Noir let herself in without knocking, black skirt brushing the doorframe, one gloved hand holding a folded page. She had been the king's eyes once. Now the king was gone, and she came here instead. Dahlia did not ask why. She had stopped asking why anyone came, after her partner left seven years deep and told her the flower would always win. She had agreed. "You wrote to the archivist about pigment lines," Noir said. "He answered me instead. He is careful now." She put the page on the bench. Dahlia read it. Two lines only. A name. A location. The rusted bell tower on the edge of the old quarter, and a woman living beneath it who kept a rose bush that bloomed blue. "A rose," Dahlia said. "A rose carries the pathway," Noir said. "You do not." Dahlia left the seedlings on the bench. She walked with Noir through cold streets until the bell tower rose ahead of them, stone cracked, belfry sagging, the bell above orange with rust. A woman waited at its base in a dark blue dress. Azura Rosewyn. Dahlia had heard the name only in warnings — that Azura had told a secret once and ruined the person it belonged to. Azura spoke before Dahlia could. "I passed along a truth I should have kept. I know what people say. I am not asking you to trust me. I am offering a cutting." Behind her, against the tower's base, grew the bush. The blooms were the blue Dahlia had chased in library margins for a decade. "Why give it to me," Dahlia said. "Because it is the only pigment line that will cross into your stock," Azura said. "And because I owe someone a repair I cannot make. You are the closest I will get." Dahlia took the shears from her coat. Azura held the cane steady. The cut was clean. Walking home with the cutting wrapped in wet cloth, Dahlia understood what she had just accepted. The pathway was hers now. So was Azura's debt.
