Chapter 2

That evening, Dahlia left the girls with a stack of dried herbs to sort and walked the ward line alone. She did this every week. She kept flat stones set at intervals along the tree line, each carved with the same sigil, so she could check the wards against a fixed point. The first three stones were warm under her palm and hummed the way they should. She moved through the long grass with her bag against her hip and the woods gone quiet on her left. The fourth stone sat at the base of a tall pine, deep in needle shadow. She knew the shape of it before she saw it. Tonight the shape was wrong. She knelt. The stone had split clean through the middle. The two halves had pulled apart by the width of a finger, and the carved sigil no longer closed on itself. The break was not fresh. The edges were dulled and packed with dirt, as if something had worked the crack open slowly over many nights and then smoothed its work. No tool marks. No prints. Only the broken stone and the pine above it, still and watching. Dahlia pressed her hand to the halves and felt nothing. No hum. No push back. The ward at this point was simply gone, and the gap had been gone long enough that the grass had grown over the lower edge. She sat back on her heels. Whatever was out there had not been testing this stone. It had killed it, quietly, and left the carving in place so she would not notice from the path. She thought about how many times she had walked past this pine in the last month and felt only the stones on either side carrying the line for it. She pulled a fresh charm from her bag, lavender braided around a folk symbol, and pushed it into the split. The hum came back, thin, like a single thread holding a curtain. It would hold tonight. It would not hold a week. She stood and marked the trunk with a smear of ash from her pocket so she could find this spot again in the dark. Then she turned toward the farmhouse, where the kitchen windows were already lit. The lesson she had planned for the girls had been about listening to plants. That lesson would wait. Tonight she would teach them how to set a stone.
