Chapter 1

Daisy Duke pulled the starfruit crumble from her oven and knew, again, that it would never leave. The crust glowed. Jewel-toned filling bubbled blue and purple. Anyone who tasted it would remember a dream they'd forgotten years ago. But it only worked here, in her liminal home, where nothing obeyed the rules a waking world demanded. She wanted a real bakery. A door that opened onto a real street. Her pastries died the moment they crossed over, and she had no crossing to try. She set the crumble on the counter and stared at the daisy petals ringing her single wide eye. "Can't sell a dream that melts," she said. So she packed the crumble in a box and went to find the one cook who baked things that lasted. The Void Chef floated by a dark bush whose leaves drank the light, plucking chalky gray berries and tasting them without a mouth. Daisy had met the creature once, long ago, when it named her tarts "the third-best thing I ate on a Tuesday." It still counted her among the flavors worth remembering. "Daisy Duke," it said, flat and bright-eyed. "You smell like a bakery that doesn't exist." "I want it to exist," she said. She opened the box. "But my food falls apart out there. In the real world. You make meals that hold. How?" The Void Chef leaned its starry body over the crumble. It did not eat. It knew by nearness. "Ah. A forgotten dream. Lemon. A rained-out birthday. Seven years old." Its star eyes flickered. "Good. Fragile. It has no anchor." "An anchor," Daisy repeated. "Your world leaks. Mine doesn't. I bind each flavor to something the waking world already keeps. A weekday. A name. A grudge." It curled a segment of itself toward her. "Bind your dream to a thing that survives crossing. Then it survives too." "And a door?" she asked. "I have no way through." "You have a summons." The creature drifted toward an empty stall she hadn't noticed. A canopy of blue, grey, and pink stripes hung over a wide, dark order window. It looked briefly made, and impossible to forget. "The Midnight Cafe answers cooks who owe the cosmos a debt. Trade me something, and it stays lit long enough to walk through." Daisy's hands went cold. "What do you want?" "The taste of the dream you never share." It paused. "Not your best memory. I don't take those. Just one flavor you keep hidden." She thought of the dream she'd never baked. Then she pressed her thumb to the crumble and gave it over. The filling dimmed one shade. The cafe window lit. Behind it, past the empty counter, she saw a real street under a streetlamp. A door. "Go," said the Void Chef. "It closes at midnight. It's always midnight." Daisy grabbed her box and stepped through the lit window. The waking world held her weight. But the crumble in her hands had already begun to soften.
