Chapter 2

Daisy practiced the angry lines all weekend, but the rage stayed flat. She knew the choice was right. She just couldn't make it real. Her voice went loud, not furious. She needed to know what true anger looked like up close. Monday morning she found it outside her building. Bryson Flickenjer sat on the front steps of the brick apartment block, head in his hands. He lived two floors above her. He'd been running since dawn every day this week, chasing a spot on the track team. Daisy had watched him leave at five, green shoes slapping the sidewalk. She'd never seen him sit still like this. "You okay?" she asked. He looked up. His jaw was tight. "Coach cut the roster early. Tryouts close Friday. He says the spots are gone." "Can't you talk to him?" "I did." Bryson stood. His hands balled into fists. "Five a.m. Every morning. My dad ran in college. I did everything right." His voice stayed quiet, but it shook. "And they decided before I even showed up." Daisy went still. That was it. Not shouting. Not flailing. His anger lived underneath, pressed down hard, leaking out the edges. His shoulders stayed locked. His eyes didn't move off hers. "That's not fair," she said. "No." He breathed in. "It's not." He turned and walked back inside, slow, like holding himself together took work. Daisy stood on the steps after he was gone. She'd been playing anger wrong. She'd made it big and loud. But real rage came from wanting something badly and watching it get taken by someone who decided early. She knew that want. She'd wanted the lead since freshman year, and a senior took it every time. She went up to her room and shut the door. The tabby cat looked up from the windowsill. Daisy picked up the script. She thought about Bryson's fists, his steady eyes, the shake under his quiet voice. She read the big scene again. This time she didn't yell. She let the words come low and tight, like each one cost her something. She thought about every year she'd lost the part before she walked in. The anger rose on its own. It filled her chest and held. The cat's ears went up. Daisy's hands were shaking, and the lines sounded true for the first time. "That's it," she said. She ran the scene twice more. It held both times. The fury didn't ring false anymore. It came from a real place, her own, dressed up in the character's words. Friday was still ahead. The senior's name still sat at the top of the sheet. But Daisy finally had the thing she'd been missing. She knew what her character's anger was made of, because now it was made of hers.
