Chapter 5

The rumor reached Daisy before the final callbacks did. The senior was already being called the lead. People said the director had decided weeks ago. Daisy had sung the solo without a crack. She had played the scene real and quiet. None of it mattered if the choice was made before she walked in. She sat on the steps of the brick apartment block and stared at nothing. She pulled out her phone and called her friends. She needed them now, not strategy. Shelby came first, boots loud on the pavement, ponytail swinging. Bryson came behind her, hands in his pockets, green shoes scuffing. Sunny came last, a flower in her hair, pink shoes bright. "They already picked her," Daisy said. "Why even show up tomorrow?" Shelby sat down hard beside her. "That's what they say every year." She shrugged. "Doesn't mean it's true." Bryson leaned against the rail. He didn't talk much. When he did, it landed. "They cut me before tryouts started too," he said. "I showed up anyway. Made them watch." Daisy looked at him. His rage had taught her how to act. Now his stubbornness landed just as hard. Sunny crouched in front of her. "Listen." Her voice dropped, the way it did when she meant something. "I watched you. I never lied to you once. Your quiet lines were real. Nobody else sounds like that." She paused. "A favorite isn't the same as a winner. Go make the room look at you." Daisy knew Sunny understood that better than anyone. Sunny had spent a year feeling invisible, practicing a dance in private so one day a room would finally turn her way. If Sunny believed a quiet person could be seen, Daisy could believe it too. "Okay," Daisy said. "Okay. I'll make them watch." The next afternoon she stood in the wings for callbacks. The senior went first. She was good. She was loud. She filled the stage with big gestures and a belted note that rang off the back wall. The director smiled, the same smile from before. A few people clapped. Then the director called Daisy's name. Daisy walked out. The light was hot. Her friends sat in the dark rows. She found Sunny's flower, Shelby's red shirt, Bryson's still face. She took a breath. She played the scene the way she'd built it. Quiet. Controlled. Every angry line held low, rooted in real loss. She let the pain carry the words instead of volume. The room went still. No shuffling. No whispers. She had them. Then the solo. She didn't belt it. She sang it low and soft, aching, the way she'd learned on these steps with a stranger and a cat watching. Her voice held. Every note landed true. She finished and the theater stayed silent one long second. Then it broke open with sound. The director didn't smile the easy smile. She leaned forward and wrote for a long time. She looked at Daisy differently now, like she was seeing something she hadn't planned for. The list went up two days later. Daisy pushed through the crowd by the board. People moved aside for her. At the top, under the lead role, was her name. Not the senior's. Hers. She stood there and read it three times. Four years of watching a senior's name in that spot. Now the spot was hers, won not by being the loudest but by being the realest person in the room. Behind her, Shelby said "Told you" in her flat way. Bryson gave one short nod. Sunny grabbed Daisy's arm and didn't let go, grinning like the room had finally turned to look at both of them. Daisy had believed the choice was made without her. She had walked in anyway and made them choose again.
