Chapter 2

The gelding stood locked on the asphalt, and Dakota knew she couldn't drill him here. The lot had no fence. If he bolted, he'd run straight for the road. She'd already watched one horse tear loose on this pavement. She wouldn't gamble a second on open ground. She needed walls before she needed obedience. She made calls until one paid off. The county fairgrounds still kept a barn with a corral out back. The manager told her she could use it one night, after the crowds cleared. Dakota loaded the gelding and drove. The fairground barn rose red against the dusk, its wide roof sagging with age. Behind it sat a round pen ringed by weathered rails. Dakota led the gelding inside and latched the gate. For the first time, walls closed around them both. She let out a breath. Here, a bolt cost nothing but a lap of the pen. The gelding tossed his head and stamped. Even fenced, he tested her. Dakota tightened the weighted bridle and felt him fight the drag. She reached into her bag for something she'd packed that morning. A small nose wrap, woven with dried herbs a rancher's wife had sworn calmed hot horses. She tied it under his nostrils. He breathed the scent, and after a minute his ears eased forward. She stepped up into the saddle. "Walk on," she said, and squeezed. He planted his feet. She squeezed again, firmer. He swung his head against the reins, and the weights pulled him down. He gave one grudging step. Then another. Dakota kept her hands steady and her voice low. She turned him left along the rail. He followed. She turned him right. He followed again. They circled the pen until the sky went dark. Every time he balked, the fence let her push without fear. She drove him forward, backed him, stopped him clean. By the third hour, his refusals came slower. He was listening. Not fully. But listening. She dismounted and rubbed his neck. Sweat darkened his chest. He'd taken her orders inside these walls, on soft footing, with the herbs quieting his nerves. She had proof now that the horse could be trained. The corral had given her that. But the corral wasn't hers. She had it for one night, and dawn was coming. The championship sat on the parking lot's cracked asphalt, not this quiet pen. A horse that obeyed inside a fence meant nothing if he froze the moment she rode him back onto open pavement. She'd solved tonight's danger. Now she owned a new one. She had to move his training back to the lot, where no walls would catch him if he broke.
