Chapter 48

Boots hammered the yard. The boss sat calm, hands folded, sure his men would break the door before Damian could act. Damian looked at the man who had paid for every mark, every knife sent at his back. This was the last name in the ledger. He would not run. "You want a duel," Damian said. "You have one." The boss stood at last. A thin sword hung on the wall behind him. He drew it slow, testing the weight, still smiling. "You reached me," he said. "But you are tired. I can see your hands shake." He was right. Damian had ridden for days with little sleep. His grip trembled. He breathed and let his mind go quiet, the way his master had taught him. The shaking eased. He raised the gemmed blade, its runes catching the gray light. Rolo pressed her shoulder against the door. "They're coming through," she said. She was always moving, always fast, and now she braced her whole small body against the wood. "Make it quick, Damian." The boss came first. He was old, but his blade was quick and sharp. He cut high. Damian turned it aside. The boss stepped in and slashed low, aiming for the leg. Damian dropped his point and stopped the strike cold. Steel scraped steel. The man was skilled. He had practiced this his whole life while hiring others to die for him. But he fought like a man who never faced real danger. Damian had faced it every day for three months. He let the boss push, let him tire. A fist struck the door behind Rolo. The wood cracked. "Now," she said. The boss lunged, overreaching, sure he could end it. Damian sidestepped. He struck the man's wrist with the flat, then drove the point deep into his chest. The boss froze. His thin sword fell and rang on the stone. He stumbled back to his table and sat, one hand pressed to the wound. Blood came dark between his fingers. He looked at Damian with something like surprise. "All those men," he whispered. "And a boy ends it." His head dropped. He slid from the chair and did not move. Damian stood over the body. The last name in the ledger was dead. No one paid the marks now. No more waves would come for his students. The door burst open. Two guards spilled through, then stopped short. They saw their master on the floor. They saw the gemmed sword and the boy who held it. One lowered his weapon. "He's dead," the guard said, quiet. "There's no one left to pay us." Rolo grabbed Damian's sleeve. "Then we go," she said. She pulled him toward the broken door, past the men who no longer had a reason to fight. Damian let her lead him out into the morning. Behind him, the walled house stood silent. The hunt that had chased him for months was over. Only the masked swordsman remained.
