Chapter 2

Skylar walked beside Damien through the cold park, still gripping his hand. Her fingers were like ice. He could not court a woman who might vanish back onto a bench before morning. The tea he promised meant nothing if she had no roof over her head tonight. So he made a choice. He would not send her back to the streets. He would bring her somewhere warm and safe, even if it moved too fast. "My building is close," Damien said. "There's a room at the top. You can rest there. No cost." She stopped walking. Her sky-blue eyes moved over his face, reading him. She had learned young to spot danger in a stranger. "Why?" she asked. "People don't give away rooms." "You're freezing," he said. "That's the only reason I need." She studied him a moment longer. Then she nodded once. "Okay. But I leave when I want." They rode a private lift to the top of a black tower. The doors opened on a wide penthouse. Glass walls showed the whole city glowing below. Skylar stepped inside slowly. She touched nothing. She looked at the huge bed with its dark frame and black silk sheets, then at the kitchen, then back at Damien. "This is yours," she said. It was not a question. "Yes," he said. He did not explain how much of the city his name owned. He heated water and poured it into a delicate cup with a gold rim. He set it in her hands. She wrapped both palms around the warmth and breathed in the steam. Some of the fear left her shoulders. He watched color return to her cheeks and felt his thirst pull at him. He held still. He wanted her to trust him, not to flee. "I sleep out there because rent went up," she said plainly. "My shop makes handmade things. Not enough sold last month." She sipped the tea. "I'm not asking you to fix it." "I know," Damien said. He kept his voice level. He owned the platform where she sold those things. He said nothing about it. She finished the tea and set the cup down with care. Then she looked at the bed and back at him. "I'll stay tonight," she said. "That's all I'm agreeing to." "That's all I asked," he said. He showed her the room, then stepped back toward the lift to give her space. She was safe now. She was under his roof, not lost to the dark. But her last words stayed with him. She would leave when she wanted. She trusted no one for long. Winning her heart would take far more than a warm room and a cup of tea. And tomorrow she would wake in his tower with questions he was not ready to answer.
