Chapter 8

They rode the elevator up to the penthouse with the supply bags. Skylar leaned against Damien's shoulder, tired and easy. He should have felt calm. Instead her scent filled the small space and woke the hunger he had fed only days ago. Up close it was worse. Her pulse beat at her throat, steady and warm, and every beat pulled at him. He had built a life on control. Right now it was slipping. Inside, she dropped the bags by the counter and stretched. "I'll start the blue batch tonight," she said. She turned to him, close enough that he could count her breaths. His jaw ached. His hands wanted to reach. "I need to step out," Damien said. He moved for the door. Feeding again was the only safe answer. If he stayed, he might hurt her. Skylar caught his sleeve. "You keep leaving," she said. Her voice was flat and sure. "Every time it gets quiet, you go. Tell me why." "Let go," he said. It came out rough. His teeth had grown. He felt the points press against his lip. He turned his face away from her. She stepped in front of him instead. Her sky-blue eyes moved over his mouth. She saw the fangs. He waited for the flinch, the scream, the run. She grew up learning to read a room, to spot who was dangerous. She had every reason to bolt. She did not flinch. "There it is," she said quietly. "That's the thing you've been hiding." Damien stood frozen. His hunger screamed at him to move. He did not trust his own body. "You should be afraid," he said. "I've been afraid my whole life," she said. "I know what a real threat looks like. You've had a hundred chances. You keep running from me instead of at me." She lifted her hand. Slow, deliberate. Her fingers traced his cheek, then the line of his jaw. He held perfectly still. She touched the tip of one fang. Cold shock ran through him. No one had ever done that. No one had chosen to. "You won't hurt me," she said. It was not a question. It was a fact she had decided. Something in Damien broke loose. Not the hunger. The wall he'd kept between them. He pulled her against his chest, careful, his arms sure now instead of shaking. His fangs stayed where they were, and he did not fear them. Holding her, the thirst quieted to a low hum he could carry. Skylar looked up at him and smiled. Small. Real. The same smile from the supply shop, but wider now. "No more running," she said. "No more running," he agreed. He had spent the whole story keeping his nature from her. Now she knew, and she had stayed. But she still did not know the rest. She did not know her blood was his cure, or that he owned the platform she was fighting to save. He held her and felt those two truths grow heavier in the quiet.
