Chapter 1

Dan GhostApple dropped the new blade on his anvil and watched it snap in two. He had been forging weapons for a week, each one for the same reason: somewhere past the orchards sat a cursed drum kit, and he meant to find it. The town called it the thing that silenced Scary Applesville. Dan called it his last chance to matter. He had held a dying band together once, alone, until the quiet broke him. He would not walk into that silence carrying junk. He held both halves to the forge light. The break was clean and glassy. Water alone made his steel brittle. He knew that now. He needed a real tempering method, or every blade he made would shatter the moment something fought back. The forge door scraped open. Petra Stoneheart stepped in without knocking. She was the smith who worked the deep stone roads, the one Dan had avoided asking because she charged in favors, not coin. A crown of rough crystals held back her dark hair. She picked up the broken blade and bent it toward the heat. "You quench in water like a baker cooling bread," she said. "Steel hates surprises. It needs to cool slow, then bake again low and long." "Then teach me," Dan said. Petra laughed. "I don't teach. I trade." She set down the blade. "I want one song played at my forge when the work's done. A real one. Yours." Dan went still. He had not played for anyone since the band fell apart. The ask cost more than metal. But a brittle sword would get him killed before he reached the kit. He nodded once. She showed him. First a slow oil bath, not water. Then back into the coals at a low, steady heat, held until the steel turned a soft straw color. Dan worked a fresh blade through both steps. His arms shook. Petra corrected his grip twice and said nothing kind. When the blade cooled, Dan clamped it in the vise and struck it hard against the anvil's edge. It rang. It bent, then sprang back straight. It did not break. He turned the blade over in his hands. Finally, a weapon that would hold. The path to the orchards opened in his mind, sharp and real. The door scraped again. Jake Hazardapple leaned in the frame, red hair wild, a grin on his face. Dan knew him by reputation only: the guitarist who pushed dead acts to play true or quit. "Heard you're hunting the drum kit," Jake said. He glanced at the blade, then at Dan. "You can't walk in there swinging. That thing answers to music, not steel. You'll need a song before you need a sword." Dan looked at the blade he had just saved. Then at Petra, who already wanted one. He had come to the forge to never play again. Now everyone wanted him to sing.
