Chapter 1

Danny Cornapple wanted one clean take. One song good enough to prove the critics wrong about his last record, the one they called a lucky accident. But he couldn't even press the red button. Every path across his basement ended at a dead amp, a cracked drum pad, or a mixer he'd stopped trusting two albums ago. He'd bought new gear instead of fixing the old. Now the broken pieces boxed him in. He stood between a toppled speaker stack and a reel player held shut with tape. No room to set his good mic. No floor to stand on. He had read every polite nod from every listener as a verdict. Tonight he would answer it. But first he had to clear a space to work. So he started hauling. He dragged the dead amp toward the stairs. He stacked cracked pedals in a milk crate. Dust rose and stuck to his neck. Three hours in, he had a rectangle of bare concrete, just big enough for the mic stand and his chair. He wiped his hands and reached for the record button. Boots hit the stairs behind him. Tiffiny Heartapple came down without knocking. White hair, black boots, a bag of records under one arm. She made loud, messy songs. Everyone close to her had told her the new one was a mistake. She was making it anyway. Danny barely knew her, except that she never softened anything. "You cleared a path," she said. She stepped over the milk crate. "Still broke, though." "I moved it. That's all I needed." She crouched by the taped reel player. Flipped it open. "This is your take machine?" "It works." "It eats tape." She pointed at the pinch roller, split down the middle. "You'll get thirty seconds. Then it chews your song." Danny looked at the roller. She was right. He'd been about to record the most important song of his life onto a machine that would destroy it halfway through. "I needed the floor space," he said. "Not another problem." "You've got both." Tiffiny dropped her bag on the bare concrete he'd fought three hours to make. "Floor's clear. Machine's dead. Same as always." He sat down hard in his chair. The open space mocked him now. He had moved every broken thing out of his way and left the one that mattered. The reel player had been broken for a year. He had bought a new interface instead of a four-dollar roller, and now the new interface sat buried under the junk he'd just hauled to the stairs. "I can't record tonight," he said. "No." Tiffiny pulled a record from her bag and spun it on her finger. "But you finally know what's actually broken." Danny stared at the split roller. For the first time, he knew exactly what stood between him and the take. He just didn't have the part.
