Chapter 1

Darron parked his truck outside the house where the grieving person lived. He'd been here twice already, both times getting it wrong. Today he came with his toolbox and a plan to fix the porch rail he'd noticed sagging. Maybe silence and work would say what his words couldn't. But a woman stopped him before he reached the steps. She lived three doors down and had been watching from a carved wooden bench on her lawn. The mist had left dark spots on the cushions. She spoke quietly, her arms crossed. The person inside wasn't grieving a death, she said. They were grieving someone who left on purpose. Someone who walked away and never looked back. Darron's hand went to his wallet, then stopped. The photo he carried meant nothing here. This wasn't about being too late. This was about being unwanted in the first place. He set down his toolbox and sat on the woman's porch steps, listening to her describe what she'd seen over the past six months. When she finished, he thanked her and walked back to his truck without touching the broken rail. He had to rethink everything. The woman called after him. She disappeared into the small wooden shrine next to her house and came back holding a bundle of papers tied with string. Letters, she explained. The person inside had written them over months and left them at the shrine, asking whatever spirits listened to bring the other one back. She'd found them there, blown off the altar during a storm. She pressed them into Darron's hands. Read these first, she said. Then you'll know what kind of grief you're walking into. Darron sat in his truck and untied the string. The pages were covered in handwriting that started neat and fell apart toward the end. He read about promises broken and trust shattered. About someone who'd chosen to disappear rather than stay and face what they'd done. By the last page, his hands were shaking. This person didn't need someone to show up and fix things. They needed someone who understood that sometimes grief isn't clean or noble. Sometimes it's just rage and loss mixed together until you can't tell them apart. He folded the letters carefully and put them in his glove box. Tomorrow he'd come back, but not with a toolbox. He'd come with the truth about his own anger at the person he'd lost for getting in that car in the first place.
