Chapter 2

The candle burned between David and the seated families. No one spoke. They watched him like he might vanish if they blinked. David set his hands flat on the table to steady them. He did not know why they sat here in the dark, waiting. One wrong word and they would see him as an intruder again. He needed to understand this room before he opened his mouth. Then the air grew cold. The candle flame stretched sideways. A girl stood at the far end of the table, and she had not walked in. Her dress hung in torn layers, pale blue like sea ice. Her hair floated as if underwater. David could see the dark wood of the wall straight through her arm. The families turned to her at once. The old woman lowered her head. "Eliza," she said softly. David understood then. They were not waiting for a party. They were waiting for her. This was a vigil. "You brought the cat," Eliza said. Her voice sounded far away, like it crossed a great distance to reach him. "They wait for me every year on this night. Every year they beg me to stay. I never can." "Why not?" David asked. His voice held steady now. "Because no living one ever shared the room. The door must open for someone the house chooses." She drifted closer. "The cat chose you." The families leaned forward. David saw hope crack their still faces. He finally knew what they needed. Not a gift. Not proof. A witness. Someone alive to hold the door open between their world and hers. He looked at the pumpkins he had grown, sitting on the table among them. Then he looked at Eliza. "Tell me what to do." "Speak my name to them," she said. "A living voice keeps me here till dawn. One year. One night longer." David rose. His chair scraped the floor, the only sound. He turned to the founding families who had ignored his knocks for eight years. "Her name is Eliza Whitmore," he said, loud and clear. "And she is still here." The candle flame straightened. Eliza did not fade. She smiled, and the cold in the room softened. Around the table, the old families wept without shame. The oldest woman reached across and gripped David's wrist. Her hand was warm. "You held her," she said. "No outsider ever could. You are one of us now." David felt the words land in his chest. He had wanted a seat at their table for eight years. Now they had given him one. But Eliza's pale eyes found his across the candlelight, and he understood the price. Dawn would come. She would fade. And next year, they would need him again to call her back.
