Chapter 1

Dax Varro had one job before sundown: carry a sealed letter across Inkmoss and stop a war. He stood behind a broken fence at the edge of town, moss furring the posts, and pressed the letter flat against his ribs under his coat. Two seals held it shut. Break either one and the promise inside meant nothing. He had walked out of the meeting house an hour ago with instructions and no escort. Speed and silence, they said. Nothing else would work. He had not made it a mile. A boy in a patched jacket had been trailing him since the herald board. Dax had seen him lift a coin purse there the week before, quick as a cat. Now the boy hung back at forty paces, pretending to read notices. Word travels in Inkmoss. Someone in the meeting house had spoken where they should not have, and the shape of a sealed letter meant coin to anyone with fast hands. Dax cut off the road toward a lopsided shack pieced from driftwood and bent metal. He knew the place. A trapper used it in winter and left it empty the rest of the year. He went inside, shut the door, and waited in the dark. Through a gap in the boards he watched the boy creep up the path. On the shack's low beam sat a black owl, still as a nail. Yellow eyes, soot feathers. It had been there when Dax came in. It did not move when he did. He pulled the letter from his coat and slid it under a loose floor plank. Then he took a folded square of paper from his other pocket, a laundry list he had grabbed off a table that morning, and tucked it into his coat where the letter had been. He shaped the cloth so the corner showed. The door creaked open. The boy stepped in, knife low. Dax let him see the paper corner, let him lunge. He caught the boy's wrist, turned it, and the knife dropped. The owl opened its wings once, a sudden black flare, and the boy shouted and stumbled back into the doorframe. Dax shoved the fake letter into the boy's hand and pushed him out the door. "Run," Dax said. "Tell whoever sent you it's done." The boy ran. Dax pried up the plank and put the real letter back against his ribs. His hands were shaking. He had bought maybe an hour before the buyer opened the paper and saw a list of shirts and socks. After that, they would come themselves, and they would not send a boy. He stepped out past the fallen fence and turned toward the deeper road into Inkmoss, walking fast, the owl watching from the shack behind him.
