Dionysus stood in his vineyard, grapes rotting on the vine before they'd even ripened. The smell hit him first — sharp and sour, like wine left open too long. He pulled a cluster free and crushed it between his fingers. The juice ran thick and brown, already fermenting into something foul. Whatever was spreading through his vines wasn't natural, and it was getting worse. He walked deeper into the vineyard, his boots crunching on fallen grapes that had split open on the ground. Whole sections of vines had turned brittle, their leaves yellowing and curling at the edges. The twisted wood looked ancient, like it had aged decades in days. He'd spent centuries perfecting his craft, learning every secret of fermentation, but this was something else entirely. This was his work turning against itself. Back in the cellar, he lifted the heavy lid off his largest storage vessel. The wine inside should have been aging into something divine. Instead, it bubbled and hissed, releasing vapors that stung his eyes. He dipped a cup into the vessel and brought it to his lips, then spat immediately. It tasted like vinegar mixed with ash, like everything good had been stripped away and replaced with bitterness. He threw the cup against the wall. Dionysus stood alone in the cellar, surrounded by vessels of ruined wine. The vineyard above was dying, the transformation spreading faster than he could track it. He couldn't fix this alone — not when he didn't even understand what was causing it. His pride had kept him searching for answers by himself, but that time was over. He needed help, whether he wanted to admit it or not.
