Chapter 2

The true thread was ash now. Djinn Sanity had saved themselves, but the cost sat before them. The hourglass scales on the lamp's sides hung locked and scorched. The forge had scorched the metal black when they slammed the balance shut. Every remaining memory thread waited untested. Until the scales moved again, Djinn Sanity could not listen for the hum they now knew by heart. They knelt and gripped the left scale. It would not tip. The chain had fused. They pushed harder. The metal held. They tried the right scale. The same. Days of work, and the one tool they needed had broken in their own hands. Djinn Sanity sat back. Their edges blurred again, blue and gold drifting loose. Panic did that. They had no name to anchor to. They had only this ruined machine and a hum with nowhere to land. Then they stopped. They had forgotten something simple. They were a djinn. Time and shape bent to them when they chose to bend them. They stood and pressed one hand flat against the lamp's swollen belly. They did not force the metal. They remembered it. They pictured the scales the moment before the fire, chains loose, cups swinging free. They held that single image the way they had once held a syllable still for three days. Motionless. Exact. The lamp grew warm under their palm. Light rose in the fused chains, a cool blue that climbed each link like water running backward. A shape formed in the air beside them, a staff of that same blue fire, its shadow dancing along the floor. It was not a weapon they had summoned. It was their own will taking form, the divine chaos in them shaping itself into a tool of order. Djinn Sanity gripped the burning staff. They swept it once across the scorched scales. The black flaked away. The fused chains parted, link by link, cooling from blue to gold. The left cup dropped. The right cup rose. The balance breathed again. The staff faded. Djinn Sanity's edges pulled back into a solid body. Their hands were steady. The scales ticked, level and free. They lifted a fresh thread and set it on the left cup. The scale dipped. False. They fed it to the forge and reached for the next. The machine worked. The search could go on. But something had changed in them, and it frightened them more than the broken scales had. They had fixed the mechanism without their name. For one clear moment, they had held their shape by will alone. The name was still lost, still the goal. Yet now a colder question waited under every thread they lifted. If they could anchor without it, what would finding it even give back?
