Chapter 1
Dominic Kane came to Blackthorn to marry a woman who did not yet know his name. He'd learned only two things about her: she sold flowers in the town square every afternoon, and she was the kind of woman a man built a whole life around. He meant to put his ring on her hand. He did not mean to wait.
He found her stall draped in bright blooms, baskets spilling over the edges. She stood behind the counter, tying a bundle of lavender with quick, sure fingers. When she glanced up and caught him watching, she didn't look away. Good. Neither did he.
Then the blacksmith arrived.
Dominic knew the type before the man spoke. Broad through the chest, scarred hands, a beard streaked with soot. A dull locket hung at his throat, never opened, worn like a wound he refused to name. Finn Okafor set a horseshoe of iron flowers on her counter, forged petal by petal. His voice went soft in a way that didn't fit a man his size.
"Made these for you," Finn said. "Figured they'd last longer than the real ones."
She smiled at the iron blooms. Touched them. Dominic watched her fingers linger, and something in his chest pulled tight. Ten years, the whole town whispered. She'd left, and this man had waited, carrying a torch heavy enough to bend steel. If Dominic gave him one more afternoon, the space beside her would close for good.
So he stepped up to the counter and put himself between them.
"I'll take everything," Dominic said.
She blinked. "Everything?"
"The whole stall. Every basket. Every stem." He set a fat purse of coin on the wood. It landed with a thud that turned heads across the square. "Name your price. I'm not haggling."
Finn's jaw worked. "That's not how she does business."
"It's how I do business." Dominic didn't look at him. He looked at her. "A man shows what he wants by what he's willing to lose. He gave you iron. I'm giving you a reason to see me tomorrow, and the day after that."
Color climbed her neck. She looked at the coin, then at the iron flowers, then at Finn. The blacksmith's hand rose to the locket at his chest and gripped it. He understood. Dominic saw the exact moment he understood.
"Keep your money," she said. But she was smiling. "Come back tomorrow. I'll cut you a fresh bundle myself."
It wasn't a yes. It was better. It was a door left open, and a rival left standing outside it.
Finn gathered his iron flowers off the counter. He didn't storm off. He looked at Dominic with the flat calm of a man who'd waited a decade already and knew how to wait more.
"She's not a thing you buy," Finn said quietly.
"No," Dominic agreed. "She's a woman I intend to earn."
The blacksmith walked away. But Dominic knew he hadn't left. Tomorrow the man would come back sharper, and Dominic would have to give her something coin couldn't.
