Chapter 4

Donovan spread the runner's blueprints on the workbench and laid his own files beside them. The clinic logo in the corner of each sheet matched. Same Vault-Tec stamp. Same pump-room numbering. Same hand-printed dates. He pulled out the satchel Andy had carried in and tugged the water-system work order free. The engineer's signature curved the same way on both pages. Donovan pressed both thumbs into the bench and made himself breathe. One clinic. One target. Two routes in, and someone else already walking them. Andy leaned against the post and watched him connect it. "Told you. Same building, same ledger. Whoever ran that clinic kept two sets of pipes and one set of secrets. Nobody draws a second water line for fun." He tapped the unmarked room circled on the runner's sheet. "That's where the shooters came from. Bet you a week of caps." Donovan rolled the sheets into his camo-patterned board case, zipped the notebook pocket, and walked to the lookout platform at the back fence. Marcus was already up on the wooden deck, rifle across his knees. Zelda climbed the ladder behind Donovan, medical bag bumping each rung. From the platform Donovan could see the whole yard: the gate, the coffee hut roof, the concrete pillar marking the hatch. He spread the blueprints on the planks and weighted the corners with shell casings. "Two ways in," Donovan said. "Main hatch under the slab. Second pump line we didn't know existed. If they're using the second line, they walk under our feet and come up wherever the pipe surfaces. We have to assume that's inside the perimeter." Marcus studied the sheet without touching it. "Then the perimeter moves out," he said. Zelda nodded once. "And the clinic tent moves in. I'm not patching people in the open." They worked it through in under an hour. Donovan drew the new line: a hardened barrier of chainlink woven through rebar and barbed wire, ringing the back lot wide enough to swallow the pillar and the suspected pipe ground. Two more lookout platforms at the corners. Zelda's tent shifted behind the equipment shop, inside the new ring. Marcus would cache rifles in the shop and the coffee hut. Andy, watching from the ladder, offered the layout of the clinic's old delivery bay from memory. Donovan wrote it down. He did not thank him. By dusk the first posts were sunk and the wire was going up. Donovan stood at the unfinished gap and looked out past the fence line. The job had been one route and one clock. Now it was one clinic with two doors, a defended yard, and a partner he hadn't picked. He had closed the question of where the runner came from. He had opened a harder one: which door did he go through first, before someone else closed both.
