Chapter 7

The next morning Beak led Dorian out past the sunflowers by the blue door. Dew soaked their boots. Beak stopped at the tree line and rolled his shoulders, and his bright wings caught the sun. "A barrier," he said. "Wider than my old wards. It has to know your people and lock out everyone else." He showed Dorian the shape of the spell with his hands. Draw the circle in your mind. Name the ones you let through. Push the rest out with love, not fear. Dorian listened. He thought of Evander asleep in the back room. He thought of Callie stirring the fire. He thought of Beak standing beside him now, patient as ever. Dorian closed his eyes and cast. The magic rose easy. He named Callie. He named Evander. He named Beak. Then he pushed. He felt the barrier stretch out through the trees, over the healing pool, past the far ridge, and close again behind the cabin in a clean ring. The air settled. A bird landed on the line and hopped through without noticing. Dorian opened his eyes. "It's done," he said. Beak walked to the nearest tree and pressed his palm against nothing. His hand stopped in the air, then passed through. He tried again with his eyes shut. Same result. He turned back to Dorian and smiled, but the smile did not reach his eyes. He looked tired. He looked sad. "What is it?" Dorian asked. "Did I do it wrong?" Beak shook his head. "You did it perfect." He looked down at the grass. His wings drooped a little. "I have to tell you something, and then I want you to forget I said it." Dorian waited. Beak lifted his eyes. "I love you," he said. "I have for a long time. Watching you love him breaks something in me every day. I thought I could sit with it. I can. But you asked, so there it is." Dorian's mouth opened and did not find a word. His chest went hot, then cold. He had thought of Beak as a teacher, a friend, family. He had never once thought of this. Beak lifted a hand before Dorian could speak. "Don't answer," he said. "I'm not asking you to change anything. The barrier holds. Evander is safe. That's what matters today." He turned toward the cabin and walked back through the sunflowers, wings low. Dorian stood alone in the wet grass. The ring of his own magic hummed around the land he loved, and inside it, everything had just shifted.
