Chapter 1

Dr. Silas Mendel wanted to build a capital where every mind linked as one, ruling the Star Shell under his banner. Tonight that dream sat frozen. The animals he had made from men and women were gone. Their empty pens gaped open in the lab wing of the complex where he raised life and remade it. Cats, dogs, a lion still half-remembering how to speak. Without them, his mind-link tests could not run. His empire waited on the far side of a broken lock. He found the panel first. A seamless wooden door in the wall, its hidden compartment hanging open. The tranquilizer canisters he kept there were gone. Someone had known exactly where to look. "They didn't run," Elena said behind him. His wife stepped over a chewed cable, goggles pushed up on her hair, her hands already black with grease from the broken door mechanism. She ran the technology that kept his work alive, and she trusted numbers more than his hopes. "The latch was cut clean. One of them used a tool." She looked at him hard. "You made them smart, Silas. Now they're smart enough to leave." A crash echoed from the factory floor. Metal on metal. Silas ran toward it, Elena close behind. Marcus met them at the wide doors. The builder had a coil of net cable slung over one shoulder and a wrench in his fist. He led the crews who raised every wall of this place, and he did not like chasing loose beasts through his half-built streets. "They're in the loading yard," he said, breathing hard. "Herded together, near the fruit bins. Frightened, not fighting. We block the exits, we get them back." "No cages left," Silas said. "They opened the compartment. Took my darts." Marcus grinned without warmth. "Then we build a wall of people." They moved fast. Marcus set his crews shoulder to shoulder across each gap. Elena rerouted the yard lights to flood one corner and leave the rest dark. Silas walked into the light alone, slow, a crate of ripe fruit in his arms. He set it down and stepped back. The creatures came for the food. The lion first, then the smaller shapes, drawn from shadow by hunger. Marcus tightened his living wall. The cable net dropped. Hands and rope closed the circle. One by one, the transformed subjects were led back to reinforced pens. Silas counted them. Every one accounted for. His work could begin again. But Elena held up the cut latch, turning it in the flooded light. "This wasn't chance," she said. "They planned it. If they can plan an escape, they can plan the next one. And your capital runs on their minds." Silas looked at the caged lion. It stared back and did not blink. He had built creatures clever enough to fight him. Now he had to decide whether to trust their minds with his empire, or break them first.
