Chapter 5

The city had grown strong and calm. Its people worked, learned, and raised children in glass towers. But Silas could not link their minds until his machines ran. Tonight the foundry stalled again. One power line fed the whole floor. When the magnetic clamps sealed the pens, the mind-link machines went dark. He could not run both at once. Elena climbed down from the greenhouse tower, goggles pushed up on her forehead. She wiped grease from her hands. "You've stared at that line for an hour," she said. "It will not split itself." "I know the numbers," Silas said. "The clamps eat everything. Nothing is left for the machines." She crossed to his workbench. On it sat a small glass tank. Inside floated a single glowing cell, pale and green, the first spark he had ever grown. Beside it, a genetically-modified bee crawled along the rim. The bee lifted its head. "The tower runs its own current," the bee said. Its voice was thin but clear. "Every glass level makes power from light. I fly through it all day." Silas turned. He had built these creatures to obey. He had not built them to solve his problems. "Say that again." "The garden tower stores light in cells," the bee said. "More than the plants use. The extra goes nowhere." Elena's eyes widened. "It's right. The greenhouse levels bank power we never tap." She grabbed a coil of cable from the bench. "We run a second line down from the tower. The clamps stay on the foundry. The machines pull from the garden." They worked through the night. Silas ran heavy cable from the tower's storage cells to his machines. Elena wired the junction and watched the meters. The bee flew ahead, marking each level where the current pooled. Near dawn, Silas closed the last switch. The clamps held. Every pen stayed sealed. And the mind-link machines woke, humming, their lights steady and bright. Two power sources now, running as one system. Silas stood between the pens and the glowing tower and felt his whole plan turn real. Elena set down her tools. She did not smile. "The tower feeds us now," she said. "But those garden cells also feed the pens' backup locks. We just tied the animals' cages to the same source as your machines." Silas looked at the cable. She was right. Every creature in the foundry was now linked to the tower that powered his work. If the tower faltered, the clamps and the machines would fail together. And the transformed animals had already proven they could plan. The bee landed on the tank beside the tiny green cell. "They will learn where the power comes from," it said. "They always learn." Silas did not answer. He had solved the power. He had bound his empire to one fragile line, and the creatures he ruled shared it.
