Chapter 8

The slime crept past the marketplace entrance like oil spreading across water. Dune's tentacles writhed against their scalp, responding to something in the black substance before their mind registered the danger. The federal tracking slime had found them. Dune stepped closer, studying where the dark fluid seeped through a crack in the stone threshold. Crystalline deposits glittered at the crack's edges—residue from the containment canister they'd spotted earlier. The slime pulsed with purple veins, searching for cursed flesh to trap. Their tentacles coiled tighter, responding to the hunting magic woven into the substance. One touch and the feds would have their target locked. But Dune had spent months in those cells below, learning how federal tools worked. They grabbed a metal shard from the destroyed earpiece and dropped it into the pooling slime. The substance wrapped around the fragment instantly, its purple veins brightening as it registered the federal signature still embedded in the metal. The slime contracted, pulling itself through the crack and away from the marketplace entrance, dragging the shard back toward the recovery team's command base. Dune sealed the entrance behind it and headed for Sector 7's tunnels. The feds had just taught them how to turn their own weapons around. Scales found Dune in the tunnel three hours later, carrying a silver bracelet shaped like curling tentacles. She dropped it in Dune's palm without a word. The metal was cold but the design was deliberate—seventeen coils, one for each of her killing methods, twisted into a reminder of loyalty earned through blood. Dune slid it onto their wrist where the tentacles met skin. The marketplace would need more than hidden doors now. The feds had deployed active hunting tools, which meant every cursed person who walked through that entrance became a target. But Dune had just proved the slime could be redirected, confused, turned back on its handlers. They looked at Scales and saw the same calculation in her eyes. The marketplace wasn't just a refuge anymore. It was becoming an armory, and every test they survived taught them how to fight back. By morning, Dune had rigged a pressure gauge to the marketplace's new entrance—the one through Sector 7's abandoned tunnels that the feds didn't know existed yet. The gauge's needle sat in the safe zone, its dial calibrated to measure slime presence before anyone crossed the threshold. Three more gauges waited in Dune's pack, ready for the other tunnel exits they'd mapped. The federal slime had forced them to abandon one entrance, but it had also revealed a weakness. The feds expected cursed people to run scared, to hide and hope the hunters moved on. Instead, Dune was building tripwires and teaching their people how federal magic worked. When the next wave of tracking slime came, the marketplace would be ready—and the feds would find their weapons waiting for them at their own door.
