Chapter 1

Dutch Cassidy owned one calf, and he meant to build the biggest cattle ranch in the territory from it. The calf stood roped to a post behind his farmhouse. Dutch had taken it from a passing herd two nights back. Now it bawled for its mother, and Dutch had no money to buy it a single companion. One calf could not grow a herd. He knew that, and it sat in his chest like a stone. He walked the fence line at dawn and did the math out loud. Cattle cost cash. He had none. The bank in town would laugh a farmer off the step. He needed stock, and he needed it before winter thinned his chances. Shelly came out with a tin cup of coffee and stopped beside him. She was his wife, and she had kept the farmhouse running while Dutch chased plans that never paid. She looked at the calf, then at her husband, and did not smile this time. "You stole that," she said. It was not a question. "I'll build something from it," Dutch said. "A whole ranch. You'll see." "You'll build a rope and a hanging." She pressed the coffee into his hand. "One calf and no coin. That's not a ranch, Dutch. That's trouble tied to a post." Dutch drank and said nothing. She was right about the money. He had turned every corner of the farm looking for it. Then Shelly's face changed. She set her jaw and went inside. Dutch heard her shift the loose board under their bed. She came back with a small cloth bundle and unwrapped it slow. Inside lay a bar of gold. It caught the morning sun and threw it back, warm and heavy in her palm. "My father's," she said. "He dug it out of a claim before he died. I swore I'd never spend it." She looked at the calf, then at Dutch. "Sell it. Buy cattle. Real ones, bought fair, with papers." Dutch stared at the gold. His throat went tight. "Shelly, that's all you have of him." "And this ranch is all you talk of." She closed his fingers around the bar. "If you're set on it, do it right. No more stealing. That calf goes back to whoever owns it." Dutch weighed the gold in his hand. It was enough to buy a dozen head, maybe more. Enough to start something honest. He looked at the stolen calf still bawling at the post. Giving it back meant riding out to find the herd he'd robbed. That herd belonged to hard men. They would want to know who had taken from them. Dutch tucked the gold into his coat. "I'll ride to town today. Buy the stock." He paused. "And the calf goes back." Shelly nodded once. But as Dutch untied the rope, he knew returning it meant facing the men he'd stolen from. He had traded one problem for a harder one.
