Chapter 4

Dylan sat across from the pale lord as night fell over Nobleblood Manor. The sword lay wrapped on the table between them, close enough to touch, far enough to lose. The lord, Soren Silver, poured two cups and pushed one toward Dylan. He did not drink from his own. Dylan left his untouched too. Neither man could prove the other was no thief. "We share a name," Soren said. "I want to know how." Dylan unwrapped the blade himself. He turned it so the firelight caught the mark near the guard. "My father cut this himself. He told me our house split long ago. One branch stayed. One branch left and lost its land." Soren leaned closer. His frost-white hair caught the light. "Left branches do not usually come back for swords." "This one did," Dylan said. "My father kept a record. Names, fathers, sons. I memorized it as a boy." He spoke the list, generation by generation, slow and sure. Soren's face did not move. He rose and crossed to a tall cabinet. He drew out an old leather book and set it beside the sword. He opened it to a page of names in faded ink. "My family keeps the same record," Soren said. He ran one finger down the page. "The left branch. Listed as lost." His finger stopped. "Your great-grandfather. Here." Dylan looked. The name matched his own father's words. The two records met at a single line. The lost branch and the kept branch joined there, clean as a seam. For a long moment nothing stirred. Then a soft sound came from the window. A sleek fox slipped onto the sill, silver wings folded against its sides. Dylan knew it at once. The same creature had burned the pavilion and sent him on this road. It watched them with bright eyes, then was gone into the dark. Soren stared at the empty sill. "That fox does not come for strangers." He closed the book. "It came the night my grandfather died. It knows this blood." He looked at Dylan with new weight. "You are kin. The record proves it. The fox agrees." He lifted the sword and placed the hilt in Dylan's hand. Dylan's fingers closed around it. The doubt was gone. He had the proof the royal demanded, and he had it from a man who shared his name. "Take it," Soren said. "But know this." He tapped the record. "Both branches are named here. If you claim noble blood at court, you claim my house too. The court will ask me to speak. My word will matter as much as your steel." Dylan rose with the blade. He had won it. But now his proof hung on a cold lord's testimony, and the suitor's flowers still waited, hours past due. He had the sword. He no longer held his fate alone.
