Chapter 2

The hot rod could run now. It could not stop. Eddie learned that two nights before the full moon, braking into a tight orchard turn. The pedal sank to the floor. The car slid wide, clipped a trunk, and stalled. He sat with his hands shaking on the wheel. Speed meant nothing if the brakes quit on the turns. The hunter would wait Friday night, and any fast escape through these rows ended in a wreck. He went back to Jake Hazardapple's forge. Jake had built the axle that held. Maybe he could build the rest. Jake wiped grease from his hands and shook his head. "Brakes aren't my work," Jake said. "Fade means the fluid boils. You need a man who finishes a job right the first time. Not me." "I know one," Eddie said. He found Mac Lanapple where he always was, bent over work nobody paid him for. Mac had helped lift the axle at dawn. Mac finished things other men quit on, even when his own album sat half-done for years. He did not ask why Eddie had come. "The brakes fade," Eddie said. "Hard turns, they're gone." Mac crouched by the wheel. He pressed the pedal. It dropped soft. "Boiled fluid," Mac said. "Old lines. They can't take the heat." "Can you fix it by Friday?" Mac looked at him. "Tonight." They worked under one lamp in the garage. Mac bled every line. He flushed the boiled fluid and ran fresh. He found a cracked hose and cut it out. Eddie held the light and watched Mac's hands move without pause. Mac did not talk through it. When Eddie tried to thank him halfway, Mac shook his head once and kept working. The subject was closed. Near dawn Mac stood and wiped his hands. "Try it." Eddie drove the rows. He built speed between the trees, then stood on the pedal at the first tight turn. The car bit down hard and stopped square. No fade. No slide. He took the next turn faster. The brakes held again, firm as the axle beneath him. He pulled back to the garage. Mac was already gathering his tools. "It stops," Eddie said. "Then it's done," Mac said. He left without another word. Eddie sat in the quiet car. The machine was whole now. It ran fast and stopped clean. He could outrun the hunter through the orchards and still make the turns alive. For the first time the hot rod felt like a weapon he could trust. Then he saw it, low on the dash near the cracked trunk mark. A smear of green sap, bright and wet, where the car had struck the tree two nights back. It had not dried. It glowed faintly in the gray light, and the stain had spread wider than before, as if the wood of the orchard had left something living inside his grandfather's car.
