Chapter 1

Edgar Calloway had robbed six banks in his younger years, and now he could not spend a single stolen coin in daylight. He stood inside his stone cabin, a moss-wrapped house dug into the hillside, and counted gold into a leather pouch. Forty years ago he took this money by force. Now he wanted to give it back. A new widow two doors down had no firewood. A family with three children had no bread. He meant to leave the coins on doorsteps where no one would see his face. But his face was the problem. A tattered paper still named him. The bounty for the bank jobs followed him across the years. If anyone in town recognized the old bank robber, they would send for the law before he could leave a single coin. The door opened without a knock. Rosemary Whitmore stepped in, flowers tucked in her white hair, humming a tune he did not know. She set a basket on his table like she owned the place. She always did. "You've got your scowling face on," she said. "That means you're planning something foolish." "Go home, Rosemary." "You're carrying your father's pouch." She eyed the gold. "You mean to walk into town with that." He said nothing. The black cat on the sill watched them both with sour green eyes. Rosemary pulled an old notice from her apron. His younger face stared up from the paper, hard and thin. "They nailed these to posts when you first came," she said. "I pulled one down years ago. Kept it. I knew who you were the whole time." Edgar's hands went still. "Then why didn't you turn me in?" "Because a man who hides forty years in a cold cabin is already paying." She folded the notice and held it over the fire. "Last one left. The rest rotted off the posts. Nobody remembers that face but me." She dropped it. The paper curled and burned. Edgar watched the only proof of his crime turn to ash. His chest felt tight. For the first time in forty years, no picture of him existed in Coldharbour. He could walk the streets. He could knock on doors in daylight. "Now," Rosemary said, brushing her hands, "you can give your money away like a decent fool. But people will ask where an old hermit got so much gold." That landed harder than the bounty ever had. The bounty was gone. The questions were not. A poor man in a moss cabin did not simply hand out coins without someone wondering how he got them. Edgar looked at the pouch. He had spent forty years hiding his face. Now he would have to hide the gift itself. "Then they won't see me give it," he said. "Not the money. Not my hand. Nothing." Rosemary smiled. "And how does a grumpy old man manage that?" He did not answer. He did not know yet.
