Eizen read the message twice before burning it. The rival's second-in-command wanted a private meeting after three months of silence. This could be the crack he'd been waiting for — the kind that turns empires inside out — or a trap designed to expose how badly he wanted one. The vial arrived an hour later, wrapped in black chains with a split coin hanging from its neck. Inside, a black-and-gold mushroom sat preserved in glass. Eizen recognized the species immediately — it only grew in one place, deep in his rival's oldest territory. The second-in-command had chosen the location. The coin bore no inscription, but the split told him everything. A break. A fracture. Maybe real, maybe theater. Eizen went alone to the clearing, where massive black trees circled a sanctuary built from stone and gold. Glowing mushrooms lit the path to a pond that reflected nothing. The second-in-command waited inside the structure, a worn satchel at his feet. He didn't bow. He didn't speak. He simply kicked the satchel forward. Eizen opened it. Inside were documents, maps, schedules — three months of his own movements, cataloged with cold precision. Proof of surveillance. Proof of patience. The second-in-command finally spoke. "He knows you'll win eventually. I'm here to make it faster." Eizen studied the demon's face for lies and found only exhaustion. This wasn't loyalty breaking. This was something colder — calculation. The rival had taught his people to think in centuries, but this one had learned to count the cost. Eizen closed the satchel and nodded once. The crack had opened. Now he just had to widen it without bringing the whole structure down on both of them.
