Chapter 3

The travelers slept against the cave wall. Elara did not. She watched the two glowing pillars at the center of the temple. Blood-red threads climbed their carved grooves, rising against gravity. Every time she thought of leaving, those threads pulsed brighter. She understood now. The longer she stayed, the deeper Nyx Sol's claim sank into her. But outside, the storm still screamed. The path home was buried in glass dust. She was trapped between a god's hunger and a wall of knives. Elara stood. "I'm leaving. Now. Storm or not." Nyx Sol stepped from the shadows. Her muscles caught the pillar light. "You will die out there. The dust strips flesh." "Then help me. No worship. No offerings. Just the path." "Nothing is free." The god tilted her head. Her red eye and her blue eye held Elara. "But I am tired of taking too much. So I will show you a price you can pay." She raised one hand toward the pillars. The threads dimmed. From the dark behind the columns, a shape unfolded. It was black, taller than a man, made of shifting shadows. Faces pressed out from its body, mouths open, then sank away. It moved on clawed legs without sound. Elara stepped back. "What is that?" "Shiv," Nyx Sol said. "The last of my followers. I took their joy for a war no one won. This is what my greed made. It hungers. It always hungers." She looked at Elara. "I will send it into the storm ahead of you. The dust cannot cut what has no flesh. It will carry you home. But it will remember you owe it a debt." Elara's heart hammered. She looked at the creature. She looked at the travelers, still asleep, still breathing. She could not stay. Staying meant belonging to Nyx Sol by inches. She chose the debt. "Send it," she said. "I'll owe you." "You'll owe it," Nyx Sol corrected. "Not me." Elara woke the travelers. Shiv slid to the cave mouth and pushed into the storm. The gray haze bent around its body. A narrow calm opened behind it, a tunnel through the flying glass. Elara took the travelers' hands and ran into the gap. Dust roared on both sides but never touched them. Faces bloomed and faded across the creature's back as it led them across the flats. The town wall rose ahead. Water spilled from its channels into the fountains below. The travelers stumbled through the gate, safe. Elara turned to thank the shadow, but Shiv was already gone, melted back toward the temple. She stood inside her own wall, alive, free of Nyx Sol's grip. But she had not walked away clean. Somewhere in the dark, a hungry thing now held her name. And she knew it would come to collect.
