Chapter 1

Elara Koss had guarded this map for forty years, and now she could not read it. She spread it flat on the trapper's counter and leaned close. Woodburn's forest sprawled across the paper in her own faded lines. She had drawn every ridge and creek herself. The valley at the center still waited, unmapped, and she meant to chart it before any younger cartographer with fresh boots got there first. But water had ruined the sheet. The deepest paths, the ones no one else knew, had blurred into gray smears. Her thumb pressed a stain and came away damp. She swore under her breath. Rain had found her satchel two nights back, through a seam she should have oiled. The strong routes near town read fine. The heart of the forest was gone. The trapper watched her from behind his stacked crates. His post smelled of pitch and cured hide. "You planning to walk in on a memory?" he said. "Men don't come back from those parts. Bears den in there thick as fleas." "I don't need your worry," Elara said. "I need my lines back." She knew iron gall ink could rise again. She had used the trick as a young woman. Old iron gall never truly leaves the page. It only pales. Fresh ink, brushed over the ghost of the old, catches the same grooves and darkens them. She dug through her satchel and found the small dark bottle, cork still tight. She uncorked it. The smell hit her, sharp and familiar. She took a thin brush and worked slow. She traced where the paths should run, following the faint pressure her pen had left in the fibers years ago. The old lines drank the new ink. First one path surfaced, then another, thin and black and sure. The creek forks came back. The switchbacks climbed the ridge again. Her hands did not shake. An hour passed. The center of the map lay clear before her. Every deep path stood readable, darker than she'd first drawn them. She had her route. The trapper leaned over and looked. He went quiet. Then he tapped a spot where two paths crossed, near the valley mouth. "That's the old den," he said. "Big fellow lives there. Cave bear, broad as a door. Your line runs straight through his ground." Elara studied the crossing. Her only path to the valley passed the bear's home. She could not read her way around it. There was no other line. The map she had fought to restore now showed her exactly what stood between her and the goal she had chased for decades. She corked the ink and rolled the map tight. "Then I'll need to know his habits," she said. "When he wakes. Where he feeds." The trapper shook his head. "Nobody knows. Nobody's stayed close enough to learn." Elara slid the map into her satchel. She would be the one who did.
