Chapter 1

Elara Meadows had violet eyes, and everyone in the village said they meant magic. She had believed it for nineteen years. Tonight, alone in the weathered shack near the shore, she meant to prove it true. She set five old books on the plank floor. Their covers were cracked, their pages soft with age. A trader had sold them to her for a whole basket of eggs. He swore they held the secret to waking the power behind eyes like hers. She had traced the strange symbols a hundred times. She had whispered the words until her throat hurt. Nothing ever answered. A candle burned low on the crate beside her. She opened the top book to the page she had marked. The instruction was simple. Fix your gaze. Speak the words. Feel the eyes wake. Elara stared into the dark and spoke. Nothing stirred. No warmth. No light. No change in her eyes. She tried again, slower. She pressed her palms flat on the page and read each word aloud. Her heartbeat pounded. She wanted to feel something shift inside her, some proof she was more than a girl with an odd eye color. Still nothing. Her hands shook. She shut the book. Nineteen years of village whispers, and she had never once made the magic move. Maybe the trader had lied. Maybe her eyes were only eyes. Elara pushed open the shack door and walked out to the shore banks. She needed air. The tide hissed low. And there, close to the water, stood a willow she had never seen so bright. Its long branches trailed to the sand. Blue blossoms glowed along every strand, soft as candle flames. The light was real. It moved with the wind. It was not a village story. It was here, in front of her. She walked closer, breath held. The glow washed over her pale skin and honey hair. As she reached to touch a blossom, something warm pulsed behind her eyes. It was faint. But it was there. A pull, like a string tugged deep inside her skull. The glowing blossoms brightened when she looked at them. When she looked away, they dimmed. Elara's breath caught. She looked back. The tree flared. She turned aside. It faded. The magic was real. Her eyes answered the willow. She had her proof at last. She laughed, then stopped. Voices carried down the shore. Lanterns bobbed in the dark, coming closer. Someone else had seen the glowing tree light up the night. And anyone who watched now would see it brighten each time the strange girl with violet eyes looked its way.
