Chapter 1

Elara Thornveil’s guests had nowhere to sit, and tomorrow’s first court would fill Plumeria Grand Manor. She wanted a kingdom large enough for every family who needed a home. First, she had to prove she could welcome the people already at her door. Her purple gown brushed the marble floor as she crossed the empty hall. Pink plumerias climbed the windows outside. A tiny purple retriever raced beside her, scattering bright sparks from its coat. Elara scratched behind the puppy’s ear. “We will make this place feel lived in.” Her trusted court advisor, Celestia Nightweaver, knelt beside a bare wall with one palm raised. Brown hair fell over Celestia’s shoulder as she traced glowing marks in the air. Elara always felt steadier when Celestia checked a problem before magic made it worse. “The storeroom holds furniture,” Celestia said. “But the old manor will not release it.” Elara found the locked storeroom behind the grand hall. She pressed both hands to its door. “It belongs to the court. We need it.” Celestia studied the lock. “This house answers care, not commands.” Elara looked at the dusty door, then at the puppy. She fetched cloths and water. Celestia lifted each dusty box with a small spell. Elara wiped the furniture clean herself. She set chairs around a low table. She placed a cabinet near the wall and tucked a cushion onto a bench. The lock clicked. The storeroom door swung open. More chairs, tables, and cabinets stood packed inside. Elara laughed and clapped. “Now people can come in.” Celestia’s smile faded. A thin gold light leaked from beneath a crate at the back. Elara moved it aside and found a plumeria bloom with pink and purple petals around a golden center. The moment Elara touched it, the manor’s chandeliers flared. Vines pushed across the ceiling. They curled around every clean chair and table, then squeezed hard. Celestia grabbed Elara’s wrist. “The bloom has claimed the furnishings. Remove it before the vines reach the doors.” Elara pulled the flower free. The vines dropped at once. The furniture remained wrapped in tight green loops. The court now had seats, but no one could use them. In Elara’s hand, the golden plumeria bloom glowed brighter than before.
