Chapter 3

Dawn was close. Elara stood in the hall and faced the bound chairs again. Green vines gripped every leg and arm. By morning, the queen's report would reach other kingdoms, and new guests would come to a court where no one could sit. She had given away the golden bloom. She did not know how to break the magic. But she knew one thing. The furniture had never answered force. It had answered care. Celestia knelt beside her, brown hair falling loose over her robe. Her advisor had helped coax the locked furniture from the storeroom with cleaning cloths, not commands. "You freed these once," Celestia said. "Not by cutting. By listening." She pressed a soft cloth into Elara's hand. "Try that again." Elara knelt at the nearest chair. The vines were tight and cold. She did not pull them. She wiped the dusty seat slow and gentle, the way she had cleaned it before. "I am sorry I woke the wrong magic," she whispered. "I only wanted room for every family." The puppy pressed close to her side, its purple coat throwing tiny sparks over the wood. The sparks sank into the vines. One loop loosened, just a little. A light rose from the far corner. The blossom fairy drifted up from a wall of plumerias, pink petals glowing, spotted wings humming. She had watched Elara tend the gardens for days. Now she hovered over the chair and touched one vine with a small bright hand. "You care for growing things," the fairy said. "These vines grow too. They do not want to trap. They want tending." Elara understood. She stopped thinking of the vines as locks. She thought of them as plants. She wiped each leaf clean. She spoke soft to each loop. One by one the vines let go. They did not snap. They curled back and bloomed, opening small purple flowers along the chair legs. The fairy's light spread down the hall. Chair by chair, the vines softened and flowered and fell loose. Elara stood in a hall full of freed furniture. Every seat now wore a crown of tiny purple blooms. Nothing was broken. The wild magic had not left. It had turned sweet, the way she had hoped her whole court might. "They will sit," Celestia said, resting a hand on Elara's shoulder. "And they will see this." Elara touched a blooming chair and smiled. Then a new worry crept in. The queen's report named her gardens, not her flowering hall. Travelers would arrive at dawn expecting a small court. They would find chairs that grew flowers and a fairy in the rafters. Word of that would spread far past one blue-gowned queen. Elara had wanted a kingdom known for sweetness. Now she had something stranger and larger coming to her door, and only hours to be ready for all of it.
