Elaria stood beside the carved stone and felt the wind shift. The open eye stared past her, toward a horizon that gave nothing back. She folded the blank map and tucked it away. No more lines to follow. No more borrowed words. The cold pressed harder now, testing her. She took one slow breath, then another, and waited for the land itself to show her a sign. Her boot struck something soft beneath the snow. She knelt and brushed the powder away. A bundle of frayed cloth lay there, faded reds and blues stiff with frost. Scarves. Gloves. Pieces of cloaks worn by those who had walked past this stone and never walked back. She set them aside gently and drew a small device from her satchel — a round instrument of tuned rings she had carried since the village. She turned its dial and listened. A thin hum answered, pulling north and slightly west. The rings spun toward a cold she could feel in her teeth. As she rose, a soft step crunched behind her. A pale fawn stood at the edge of the drift, antlers branched like frost on glass. It watched her, unafraid, then turned and took three slow steps in the same direction her instrument pointed. Elaria followed. The hum guided her ears. The fawn guided her eyes. Together they cut a path the map could not draw, and the stone marker fell away behind her, swallowed by white. She had her bearing now. The glacier waited ahead.
