Chapter 30

Elaria woke on the inn bench with her cheek numb against the wood. The stew bowl was empty. The room was quieter than before. Two hours had passed, maybe more. She lifted the cooler under her coat and felt Lia's chill still steady against her ribs. Then she heard hooves on the road outside. More than one horse. She did not wait to see the riders. She slipped out the back door with her flask half-filled and her lamp unlit. Snow had thickened. The trees closed around her within ten steps. She ran until her legs failed, then walked, then ran again. When a low mound of earth showed under a leaning pine, she recognized it. The fox's den from the day before. She crawled inside on her elbows and pulled her coat over the opening. She listened. Hooves passed on the road above. They did not stop. They did not turn. But she could not tell how far behind the rest of them rode, or if any had dismounted to search the trees on foot. She took the small mirror from her satchel. Its frost-carved frame was cold enough to sting her palm. Aldric had said it would show any watcher within a bowshot. She breathed on the glass. The surface stayed clear. No figures. No shapes. For now, the woods around the den were empty. But resting longer meant losing her lead. She uncorked the tonic Lyra had pressed into her hand at parting. The liquid inside swirled berry-dark and cold. She drank it in one swallow. Warmth hit her chest, then her legs, then her hands. The shaking stopped. Her knees held when she pushed up onto them. She crawled out. She set the wheeled lantern on the packed snow and wound its base. The little cart rolled forward on its own, glass panels glowing, runes bright. It rattled downhill through the birches, away from her path, a moving light any pursuer would follow. She watched it disappear between the trunks. Then she turned uphill. A pale owl dropped from a branch ahead and glided low between the trees. Frost caught on the edges of its wings. It banked left, waited on a stump until she caught up, then flew on. Lyra had told her to watch for it. She followed. She checked the mirror at each rise. Twice the glass stayed clear. The third time it fogged at one edge, and she pressed flat behind a boulder until a pair of uniformed riders passed below on the road, following the lantern's glow through the trees. Neither looked up. Neither slowed. When their sound was gone, she stood. The owl waited on a low branch. Ahead, through the pines, she saw the weathered signboard and the shuttered windows of Lyra's lodge. She had opened the gap. The guards were chasing a light down the wrong slope. She walked the last stretch upright, cooler tight against her ribs.
