Chapter 33

Elaria set the blue vial on the table and faced the old man. "Tell me about the curse." He pointed at the cooler with his stick. "Something in your pack has been pulling at her since before you met me. Not the crystal. Something older. It rides small things — a coin, a comb, a candle." He watched her face. "You don't know which. That's the problem. Guess wrong and you cut the wrong thread, and the girl goes with it." Elaria felt the ice in her blood tighten. She had carried a dozen small objects out of the glacier. Any of them could be the anchor. "Then how do I know?" "You read." He drew a folded square of vellum from his coat and pressed it into her hand. A rough map, one building marked. "Down the slope, past the second stand of pines. The old royal archive. It's forbidden, but the door hasn't been locked in forty years. Find the book on binding-curses. Match what you carry to what's written. Then destroy the anchor. Not before." She went. The archive stood in a hollow, stone walls dusted purple with old snow, runes cut into every course. The door groaned open. Inside, cold and dust and shelves that climbed past the lamplight. She set Lia's cooler on a reading table and began pulling books. Most were useless — tax rolls, saint lists, an atlas of dead rivers. She worked fast. Lia's breath on the lid was thin. On the third shelf she found a slim volume with a dark red cover and pale blue cats stamped on the front. A guide to the old feline libraries. She almost set it aside. Then she saw the marker ribbon and opened where it fell. The chapter was on warmth-anchors. A curse that fed on heat needed a lit thing to ride — a hearth stone, an oil wick, most often a candle kept burning by the carrier's hand. Cut the flame, break the wax, and the tether ended. Elaria emptied her pack onto the table. Rations, chain, the amber lens, the shard, the locket. And there, wrapped in cloth she did not remember wrapping — a short candle with a soft, living flame. She had not lit it. It had not gone out. Wax pooled fresh on its uneven top. She understood then. It had been in her pack since the gold-lit chamber. She carried the candle outside so the archive would not burn. She set it on a flat stone. She drew her knife and cut the wick flush, then closed her hand over the wax and pushed cold through her palm until the candle split and darkened and went dead in her fingers. Inside, Lia opened her eyes. Her wings tightened. The dullness bled out of her skin. Elaria repacked the cooler and lifted the warmth crystal from her coat. The pull toward home was clean again. She started down the slope.
