Chapter 1

Elena Ashwood had promised twelve frightened people a safe place to sleep, and she still had no roof to give them. Winter was three days out. The families waited in the old mill by the river, sharing two blankets and a dying fire. Elena had led them to Maplecrypt with one plan in her head: build a refuge where humans could shelter without fear. But every building she found was rotted, collapsed, or claimed. Now the light was failing, and she had one lead left. She stood at the edge of a weed-choked lot and stared at the crooked house on it. The roof sagged. Half the windows were broken teeth. Ivy strangled the porch rails. But the frame stood straight, and the walls looked thick. It could hold twelve people. It could hold forty. The problem was the dark. Elena needed to check the inside before she moved anyone. That meant going in alone, at night, in the one town where werewolves hunted. Her hands shook. She had feared them her whole life. She forced herself up the steps anyway. The front door hung open. Inside, dust and animal droppings covered the floor. She lit her lantern and swept it across the room. On the far wall hung a strange metal disk, dark and silver, carved with stars and symbols she didn't know. It looked old. It looked wrong. She stepped toward it. A board groaned behind her. Elena spun. In the doorway crouched a shape from her nightmares. Half man, half wolf, frozen mid-change. Fur climbed one shoulder. His jaw had stretched long, full of teeth. His eyes burned red in the lantern light. Elena's scream died in her throat. She backed into the wall. Then the ceiling cracked. A rotten beam tore loose above her head. Elena couldn't move. The wolf-thing lunged. He hit her hard, driving her sideways across the floor. The beam crashed where she had stood, throwing up a cloud of dust. Nails and wood scattered around them. Elena lay under his arm, shaking. He had not bitten her. He had shoved her clear. Slowly he pulled back and crouched a few feet away, breathing in ragged growls. He did not attack. "You caught me," she whispered. "You could have let it fall." The creature only watched her. He pointed one clawed hand at the cracked ceiling, then at the strong walls, then flattened his palm toward the floor. Stay, the gesture said. He knew this house. He had been sheltering in it. Elena stood on trembling legs. The building was sound enough to save. But it was already someone's home, and that someone was the thing she feared most. She could not take it from him. She could only ask. "I have twelve people freezing by the river," she said. "I need this house. Will you help me hold it?"
