Chapter 1

Elena Blackwood had lived in the purple-doored house for sixty years, and the woman across the fence had finally started counting. For two weeks that neighbor had watched Elena from her garden. She noted things. Elena never bought groceries. Elena never aged. This morning the woman leaned over the fence rail with a smile that wasn't friendly. "You look exactly the same as my wedding photos," the neighbor said. "Forty years ago. I checked." She tilted her head. "What's your secret, dear?" Elena's hands went cold. She wanted to tell the truth to one person only, and Marcus was not ready. She had been building toward it for months. She wanted to win his trust before anyone forced the words out for her. "Good genes," Elena said. The lie sounded thin even to her. The neighbor didn't blink. "My nephew's a reporter," she said. "He loves odd little stories. People who don't change. People who don't eat." She let that sit. "I invited him to dinner Friday. You should come. We'll all eat together." Elena understood the trap. A meal, in front of a reporter, with food she couldn't swallow. The woman wanted proof. That was when Marcus came up the walk. He carried two coffees and wore the crooked smile that always undid her. He was a smart boy, funny, and he noticed everything. For months he had noticed everything about Elena too. "Morning," Marcus said. He handed Elena a cup she would never drink. Then he turned to the neighbor. "Friday dinner, huh? Elena can't make it." "And why's that?" the neighbor asked. "Because she'll be with me," Marcus said. His voice stayed light. "I've known Elena a long time. I know she doesn't eat. I know she doesn't change." He looked straight at the woman. "I also know it's none of your business. And no reporter's going to print a story with one bitter neighbor as the only source." The neighbor's smile cracked. She had no answer. She stepped back from the fence and went inside. Her door shut hard. Elena stood frozen. Marcus had just said out loud the thing she guarded most. He had said it calmly, like it cost him nothing. "You knew," Elena whispered. "For a while," Marcus said. He sipped his coffee. "I was waiting for you to tell me. I figured you had your reasons." He shrugged. "I still do." The threat was gone. The neighbor had nothing now, no leverage, no shock to sell. But Elena's secret had cracked open on its own terms, and not the way she planned. The truth was out of her hands now. Marcus held her gaze. "So," he said quietly. "When you're ready, I want to hear it from you. The whole thing. No jokes." Elena nodded. She had wanted to choose this moment. Now the choice was choosing her, and she had to decide how much of herself to give him.
